Recruitment advice

Top 10 tips to help you get a job.

1. Do your research.

Find out what companies are recruiting in your preferred area. Research the company, its values, and all the details you can about them. Get to know the company's products and services they offer. See what makes them stand out from the crowd. Compare how your skills will help and contribute towards the company's goals. Enough research will let you get a feel on what it's like working there.

2. Appearance.

Dress to impress, look smart and presentable. Arrive to your interview early. This will make a good first impression and allow time for you to prepare. Introduce yourself with a handshake, smile and a welcoming greeting. Always maintain good posture and mannerisms.

3. Preparation.

Be prepared to speak about your work history and share facts about your previous positions. Mention the times you went above and beyond for the company's you worked for. Use the STAR system when doing this (Situation. Task. Action. Result). Write out common interview questions and have the best answers prepared and ready. Read over these and familiarise yourself with them. Have a list of credible references ready, in case you are asked to provide them.

4. Attitude.

Although interviews can make people nervous, try to relax and free your mind. Realise that they have an interest in you, hence why you are now sitting there. Be positive and have a friendly attitude.

5. Listen.

Ensure that you make mental notes of key things the employer tells you. This can let you know the type of person they want. Reiterate these key points back to them when you are going over answers. Compare your experience to what they are looking for. Take your time after you have listened to a question. Prepare yourself for the best answer. A company would rather you gave them a good answer than say the first thing that comes to your head.

6. Say “no” if a job is not right for you.

You’re not going to hurt anyone’s feelings. It’s better to say no up-front than to take a position you didn’t want and then quit days later. When you do that, you’re not setting yourself up for success, nor are you allowing the recruiter to help you find the right fit.  That said, please do let the recruiter know why you are turning down the job.

7. Ask questions.

During the interview, always ask the employer questions regarding the company, staff etc. These could be things like: where do you see the company in five years? What does your ideal candidate look like? What can I do to impress you in the first 3 months? This will let you know how the company feels towards certain things. You can then have answers that match with what the employer wants.
